Case studies: innovative use of the union query (page 1 of 4)

This is a real life example. When I worked for a removal company, from one day to the other I got in charge of managing ca 50 contract moves per month (UK - Germany and vice versa). A huge planning board with loads of magnetic strips, red and black markers were on the way, but I decided not to wait till one of the strips would fall off and got lost.

Access to the rescue! Probably one of the simplest applications I ever built, but certainly very effective!

Goal of the application

  • To get a perfect overview on hundreds moves from UK to Germany (or abroad) and vice versa. This overview must enable us to schedule consolidate these shipments as efficient and cost effective as possible
  • To have all information moves at our finger tips: customers call and change dates - or leave us with special requirements. We also want to make sure this information reaches the most important persons in our team: the driver and his mate.

Start situation

We've got hundreds of files, basically all as follows:

  1. Mr & Mrs Cooper 23 cubm: Packout 05/06/2004 Heidelberg, Delivery 08/06/2004 London
  2. Mr & Mrs Johnson 20 cubm: Packout 02/06/2004 Reading, Delivery 06/06/2004 Heidelberg
  3. Mr & Mrs Smith 23 cubm: Packout 06/06/2004 Stuttgart, Delivery 09/06/2004 Peterborough
  4. Mr & Mrs Jones 23 cubm: Packout 01/06/2004 London, Delivery 04/06/2004 Heidelberg
    etc. etc. etc. etc.

How does an operator or transport planner want to see these data? Very simple, an job overview ordered day by day , a job represents:

  1. an origin / packing in the UK
  2. a delivery in the UK
  3. an origin / packing abroad
  4. a delivery abroad    next page >>
